about

Glassmaking was hot work, and there was a time when workers were presented with free beer to quench their thirst! A young apprentice had the task of fetching and carrying the bottles from the pub back to the factory - whilst working out a unique method of sharing the beer to ensure his/her own thirst was sufficiently quenched.

lyrics

As a young lad you were sent down the road
To the pig or the fish for the beer
I’d carry it back up put it down
Til on of the seniors said: “son, get ‘ere"
You’ve been drinking out of that
I said “I aye"
He said: ‘you have”
So the next time he sent me down to the pig
I lined up the bottles on the wall and I had a

Sip from this and sip from that
Little bit of foam before the beer goes flat
Sip from this and a sip from that
Pot settings such a sweaty task

Free worker’s beer, there’s common sense in that
Until the health and safety went mad
